CEU Information

Participants will have the opportunity to begin to cultivate an understanding of advocacy within the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology. The imperative for active engagement in advocacy efforts and illumination of processes by which you can effectively participate will be explored. Emphasis will be placed on refining communication styles and strategies, tailored to ensure that one's voice influences within the corridors of state government.  Contemplate on this journey forward together, the steps you can take today to champion the cause(s) of the South Carolina Speech-Language-Hearing Association (SCSHA) and our esteemed professions.

Course objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Define factors which lead to successful and less than successful communication within advocacy efforts.
2. Identify the ask with consideration to the legislator’s priorities and abilities.
3. Develop 10-20-second hook statement articulating the problem to be resolved.

Laura Purcell Verdun is a certified and licensed Speech-Language Pathologist, and owner of Voicetrainer, LLC, serving metropolitan Washington, DC. She has practiced for more than 30 years in the clinical care of voice, airway, motor speech and swallowing disorders. Additionally, she specializes as a Communication Coach in refining communication and presentation skills for the professional, with the aim of delivering with purpose and impact. She currently serves on the ASHA Council for Clinical Certification in Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology, including as 2024 Vice Chair for SLP; ASHA representative to the CMS MACRA Episode-Based Cost Measure Wave 6 Clinician Expert Workgroup – Movement Disorders; and the ASHA Ad Hoc Committee on Centennial Planning, #ASHA100. She was honored to serve as ASHA 2021 Convention Co-Chair/SLP in Washington DC, #RisingUnited; and completed two 4-year terms appointed by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, to the Department of Health Professions Board of Health Professions, and the Board of Audiology & Speech Pathology. In her free time, you will find her hiking with her beloved Bernese Mountain Dog, HANK.
