The national pandemic exacerbated existing alarming trends in mental health concerns. As schools and programs have returned to full in-person learning, there is an unprecedented need to equip speech language pathologists with resources needed to recognize and respond appropriately in the face of a possible mental health crisis. This Mental Health First Aid Certification training is designed to teach Speech Language Pathologists how to help children and youth (ages 12-18) who are experiencing mental health or addiction challenges. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including ADHD), and eating disorders.
