2022-23 SCSHA Foundation Student Scholarship

Each year, the SCSHA Foundation accepts applications for the SCSHA Foundation Student Scholarship.

The COMPLETE application must be RECEIVED NO LATER THAN December 31, 2023.
Recipients will be notified prior to the SCSHA Convention, February 1-3, 2024.

This scholarship is open only to CURRENT student members of SCSHA. The eligibility for the award is based on a point system and is determined by an outside application review committee.  The scholarship application is posted on the SCSHA website.  NOTE:  The complete scholarship application MUST BE RECEIVED on or before December 31, 2023 to be considered for review.

  1. The SCSHA Foundation Scholarship is a competitive, merit-based scholarship.
  2. Applicants must adhere to ALL application instructions and guidelines, using the application template provided.
  3. ONLY COMPLETE scholarship applications received by the due date will be reviewed by the outside SCSHA Foundation Scholarship review committee. All letters of recommendation must be submitted with the application.
  4. The scholarship application, including letters of recommendation, must be delivered to the address provided and received NO LATER THAN December 31, 2023.

Eligibility Requirements for Scholarship Application:

  • RISING Senior in an undergraduate degree program in speech-language pathology, speech and hearing science in South Carolina who plans to continue in the field;

OR

  • CURRENT Graduate student who has completed at least one semester in an accredited graduate degree program in speech-language pathology or communication sciences and disorders in South Carolina;

AND

  • Applicant MUST BE CURRENT STUDENT SCSHA MEMBER of the South Carolina Speech-Language-Hearing Association in the year of submission and for the year the scholarship is to be awarded.

 Requirements for Application:

  • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation describing the applicant’s academic and/or clinical ability.
    Letters may be from academic faculty, clinical educators, or combinations representing each. Individuals providing letters of recommendation should have direct knowledge of the student’s academic performance and achievements.
  • An original, personal essay of 500 words or less related to the profession and the applicant’s professional aspirations. 
  • Official Transcript sent from institution to the address provided.

Deadline for submission is to be received NO LATER THAN December 31, 2023.

2023 Sharonda Coleman-Singleton Memorial Scholarship

 Award Amount: $1000
This scholarship fund was established in memory of Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, a victim of the tragic Emanuel Nine shooting in Charleston, SC in 2015.  Ms. Coleman-Singleton was a member of ASHA, and beloved high school speech-language pathologist and track and field coach. 
 
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:

  • Be a minority student, currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master's degree in Speech Language Pathology.
  • Be a minority Rising senior in an undergraduate degree program in South Carolina who plans to continue in the field, OR a graduate student who has completed at least one semester in an accredited degree program in South Carolina; and
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

 Requirements for Application:

  • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation
  • At least 2 letters must be from a clinical and/or academic instructor familiar with the applicant's performance as a student, describing the applicant’s academic and/or clinical ability.

 Letters may be from academic faculty members, clinical supervisors, or both. One of the three letters may be from a teacher.

  • One  of the letters of recommendation must come from a teacher, counselor, coach or supervisor, who is knowledgeable of the applicants’ volunteer efforts and participation. (i.e. athletic participation, and school or community involvement)

 Supplemental Application Requirements:

    1. A personal statement of at least one page addressing:

  • Leadership ability in student and/or community service
  • Demonstrate and provide a description of athletic involvement in at least one sport in the community or school settings.
  • School, community and/or church involvement.

   2. Provide examples of leadership experiences that demonstrate the applicant’s commitment and dedication.
   3. Must submit an OFFICIAL, CURRENT transcript from the student’s college or university. (including Fall semester, 2022)
   4. An original personal essay of between 300 to 500 words related to the profession and the applicant’s professional aspirations (NOT TO EXCEED 500 WORDS)

 Only Complete scholarship applications will be reviewed. The completed application and documentation must be RECEIVED NO LATER THAN December 31.

The scholarship recipient will be notified prior to the 2024 SCSHA Convention.
